Earn the Railroading Merit Badge

Troop 964B offers a workshop on both Saturday and Sunday, during the annual Train Show, where Scouts can earn the Railroading Merit Badge. Scouts from ANY Scouts BSA (SBSA) troop can register for the workshop. Please register early as spots fill quickly and only a limited number of scouts can attend.

This workshop meets all requirements for the Merit Badge including Operations Lifesaver, Railroading Industry, Car Building, Time tables and scheduling, and a Review and Tour of all Train Layouts. Details for the workshop are below along with the registration paperwork for Scouts.

SBSA Troop 964B Railroading Merit Badge Workshop Details

Costs:

$30 per Scout – Includes admission to Train Show and supplies for Merit Badge Class including an HO Scale Freight Car. Scouts will be able to run their Freight Car on an HO display at the show, and then take it home.
Lunch, served at our Club Car, can be added at the time of registration for the Scout at the time of registration.
Pre-purchased lunch options include chips, drink and a baked good

Workshop Dates & Times

Workshop is offered on both days, Saturday and Sunday during our annual Train Show.
* Scouts need ONLY attend ONE day, not both
** Scouts should ONLY attend for the day they register

Check-in: Typically at 11:00 AM Both Days – 10:30 AM if purchasing meal package
Workshop: 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM Both Days – Scouts will be released after meeting with a Merit Badge Counselor which may delay departure.

Guidance for Scouts

Note: Besides water, there will be no eating or drinking (including chewing gum) during the merit badge class periods
Dress Code: Class A Uniforms
Arrival: Arrive by 11:00AM, Scouts must check-in before classes
What to Bring:
     A full copy of the Railroading Merit Badge Worksheet in a binder or on a clipboard* HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
     Notebook or Binder with paper
     2 Pencils, 2 Pens
     Water Bottle
Pre-Requisites:
     Merit Badge Blue Card SIGNED by their Troop Scoutmaster
     Complete Requirement #1 of the Merit Badge as documented the Railroading Merit Badge Worksheet
     Scouts should have lunch BEFORE workshop
          Lunch can be purchased at our Club Car beginning at 10:30AM

Scouts who have purchased a meal ticket should check-in early at 10:30AM to have lunch in the Club Car prior to the Merit Badge Workshop.

1. Registration is open to any Scouts BSA youth members. Registration is not available for youth not in a Scouts BSA program.
2. Merit Badge is held at Lake Ridge Middle School, 12350 Mohican Rd, Woodbridge, VA 22192
3. Adults attending Train Show with a registered Scout must pay $10 entrance fee
4. Refunds may be requested BEFORE March 1st. No refunds after March 1st.
5. There are ONLY 80 spots available on each day
     a. Scouts need only attend one day to earn the merit badge.
     b. Scouts may attend either day desired.
     c. Cost is same for either day (Saturday or Sunday).
     d. Service dogs are welcome, though pets and other animals are not permitted in the school building.
6. Any changes to submitted registrations should be sent to railroadingmeritbadge@troop964.org. Changes to registration date are possible only if there is available spaces.
7. Scouts are typically grouped by Troop as best possible. Registered siblings are placed in the same group. If you have specific grouping requests please contact railroadingmeritbadge@troop964.org
8. Multiple Merit Badge Counselors will be present to support the completion of the merit badge. For your scout’s bluecard do not list a counselor as it will be filled in when they meet with the counselor on the day of the workshop.
